The school has modern facilities and extensive ICT (Information and communication technologies). It has a very broad curriculum and extensive co-curricular programme. Forty different sporting codes are offered to students as are a variety of cultural activities which allow students to follow their own interests. Traditional academic subjects are fundamental to education at the school, but there are a large number of special interest subjects such as Outdoor Education, Dance, and Hospitality (top school in New Zealand for Hospitality training at high school level).

Fifteen years of experience of international students and a large team of staff to look after student's welfare ensure that quality services are provided to the students. The school has a highly rated ESOL department with cutting edge computer assisted language learning. Home-stay accommodation is carefully selected and monitored by the Home-stay Manager. We value our international students and provided excellent pastoral care and student support.

Howick College is a decile 10 (top socio-economic area) government school. It is a sought after school with a large number of out-of-zone applications every year. In 2010 we accepted 125 out of zone applications. The students of the school have consistently gained very good results in the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, the national qualification which lays the foundation for successful tertiary studies. In Level 3 of the internationally recognised NCEA qualification, Howick College performed significantly higher than the national average pass rate. The pass rate for the Scholarship examinations was also well above the national average.

A large percentage of year 13 students go on to University and our retention rate of senior students in 2009 was one of the highest in Auckland. (83%).

Howick College also has a high success rate in many areas of academic pursuit. This is thought to be a record number of wins over the many years this competition has been going. We also have the top ranked Junior Premier Debator in Auckland 2010. Our students have gained international success in many areas of life an our international students have returned to many countries and gone on to successful university and business careers.

We also have a teacher voted the Microsoft World's Top Teacher in our social studies department and another teacher in our highly regarded science department who was awarded Microsoft Distinguished Teacher 2009 and received the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in science teaching in 2010. The school attracts highly qualified and innovative staff.

  • Many of our students have gone to top universities around the world for instance one last year gained entry to a top University in Japan, Sofia University, others have gone to top American universities such as Harvard.
  • The reported list of Howick College graduates in 2010 from New Zealand Universities was 177 students. Of this list of graduates 20 gained post-graduate diplomas or qualifications, 11 gained Masters Qualifications and 3 gained Doctorates.
  • Of all these students 149 went to Auckland University which is ranked in the top 50 universities in the world.
  • This is a pattern that has been repeated for many years.
  • Howick College students are always in the top three High Schools for success in their students' first year at university because the school believes in teaching their senior students to take responsibility for their own learning and to be self-motivated rather than relying on other people to organise and control their learning.

Howick College is also known for its sporting achievements and has attracted some high quality sports people to our staff. We believe it is very important for students to participate in activities they enjoy and have attempted to provide a wide range of sports, clubs and groups such as dance groups, bands, orchestras, debating and short term competitions organised in tutor groups, so that students can meet other students in a friendly atmosphere. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for many activities such as the International Food Festival so they learn leadership skills.

Howick College welcomes students from all over the world and provides positive, rewarding programmes with an emphasis on student-centred activities to help develop a life-long love of learning.
